Friend, I’m writing to wish you a happy July 4th -- and urge you to join me in taking action to protect voters’ rights >>
Most of us can’t celebrate this July 4th the same way we did in previous years. But there’s one personal tradition I’m still observing -- and I hope you’ll join me.
You see, each July 4th, I take a moment to reflect on American democracy -- what it means to me, how far we’ve come, and how much further we must go to live up to its promise.
This year, we are facing a national pandemic and taking part in movements demanding an end to systems that brutalize and punish Black people. I believe that more than ever, the right of each of us to have a say in our future is vitally important.
But if we don’t take action, far too many voters are at risk of losing that right -- because of voter suppression, inadequate voting opportunities, or disinformation meant to confuse and discourage eligible citizens from being heard.
So, I’m asking Common Cause members to help commemorate this important day by taking action to protect our democracy. It only takes a few minutes to make a major impact for voters in your state -- with our Safe Voting Now campaign! Just click your state to get started >>
Right now, Common Cause’s state leaders are working with election officials to answer some very important questions in time for November.
Who can vote by mail? Will there be enough functioning polling places to prevent long lines? And what do we do to make sure that every voter -- regardless of state, residence, disability, race, or age -- can be heard?
The best solutions vary state by state -- which is why we’ve launched Safe Voting Now, a nationwide coalition of voting rights, civil rights, and grassroots advocacy groups. Together, we’ve already identified each state’s top reforms we can enact in time for November -- and now we’re executing our plan to make it happen.
And Friend, we can’t do it without you.
These reforms -- like expanding vote-by-mail access, extending early voting, or blocking purges of eligible voters -- will help millions of our neighbors have their say. We’ll set you up with everything you need to take action from home -- using your phone and computer to pressure decision makers.
