Dear John,
As we all face the possibility of an impending government shutdown, we want you to know that AFGE is here to support you. We understand that this situation creates a real hardship for you and your families. It is fundamentally unfair for hardworking civil servants who protect Americans, serve our veterans and armed forces, and ensure the safety of this country, to be forced to work without pay or face furloughs due to the lapse in appropriations. We are actively encouraging Congress to act now to prevent this shutdown and ensure that you are not left bearing this burden.
We also want to update you on another lawsuit that we filed earlier today. This lawsuit challenges the disrespectful and unlawful memo issued by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) threatening reductions in force if there is a government shutdown. We firmly believe these threats are unlawful and that the government cannot engage in mass firings during the shutdown, and you can find more details about the lawsuit here.
Finally, in addition to fighting for you on Capitol Hill and in the courts, we have put together resources for you and your AFGE local union to use during the shutdown. You can access AFGE’s shutdown updates and resources here or visit www.afge.org/shutdown.
Please check back on that page often for updates and be sure to contact your AFGE local union if you have any questions.
Thank you for all that you do for the American people.
In Solidarity,
AFGE
