Unfortunately, it’s likely that at midnight, our federal government will enter a shutdown.
There will be a whole lot of headlines about this, so let’s get straight to the facts: President Trump and the Republicans, who are in the majority, are proposing a budget that would raise healthcare premiums, further decimate medical research and vaccine availability, and threaten to shutter rural hospitals and nursing homes.
The budget they are trying to ram through Congress will damage our already broken healthcare system and give millions of Americans new sticker shock—including double-digit hikes in healthcare premiums. This would be a devastating blow to the millions of Americans who are already struggling to make ends meet.
A government shutdown is a serious matter. Hundreds of thousands of hardworking federal workers will be furloughed, and the costs can easily range from hundreds of millions to billions of dollars.
Republicans, however, have made their position clear. They won’t lift a finger to help the American people and won’t even consider good-faith negotiations on the budget. I don’t see how any Congressperson, in good conscience, could vote for their proposed budget.
If I were your Congressman, I would vote NO on this disastrous Republican budget.
Since President Trump was elected and Republicans took control of Congress, the cost of groceries has gone UP, electric and utility bills have gone UP, childcare prices have gone UP, used car prices have gone UP—and now they plan for healthcare costs to go UP as well.
Enough. Democrats have to stand against the Republicans’ extremist agenda and hold the line for working families starting NOW.
