John, Today is Independence Day, but for who? This holiday is meant to symbolize the freedom and liberty of our nation. But among everything happening right now in our country — from Black Lives Matter protests to COVID-19 ravaging our communities to the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression — we are reminded just how unjust and unequal our country still is and has been for marginalized and underserved communities. Instead of a level playing field, Black, indigenous, and people of color continue to face severe inequities in all aspects of modern society — health, pay, education, you name it. Immigrants who are essential to the fabric of our country are vilified and demonized by both Republicans and some Democrats. Veterans who put their lives on the line for our country are all but forgotten about when they come back from their tours of duty. Much of our country’s greatness comes from those who do not get to fully benefit from what it has to offer. Instead, our country is free for those who can afford it.
