In a chilling address today to America’s generals, Donald Trump openly
described U.S. cities as “training grounds” for the military and called it
“a war from within.”

Speaking directly to hundreds of the nation’s top military officers, Trump
singled out Democratic-led cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York
– painting them as enemy territory to be “straightened out one by one.”
For decades, presidents respected the constitutional boundary between
politics and the military. Trump shattered it today, pushing his
authoritarian vision into new and dangerous territory.

At the very same time, Republicans in Congress are showing exactly how far
they will go to enable him. At midnight tonight, the government will shut
down – because Republicans refuse to fund health care and essential
services while protecting billions in tax breaks for billionaires.

Trump’s threats and the GOP’s chaos are not isolated. They are two sides
of the same agenda: to dismantle democracy, to undermine trust in our
institutions, and to keep power concentrated in the hands of the few while
families across the country pay the price. And while Trump threatens to
use the military as a political weapon, he continues filling the courts
with judges who will rubber-stamp his abuses of power for generations.

That’s why tonight’s fiscal year-end deadline matters so much. People For
is exposing Trump’s abuses of power in real time. We are mobilizing to
hold Republicans accountable for their dysfunction. And we are preparing
for the midterm elections, when millions of voters will have the chance to
change the balance of power in Congress and block Trump’s authoritarian
agenda.
