Dear John,

My name is Daniela, and I recently joined Immigrants Rising as the Policy Advocacy Senior Manager!

Shortly after joining the team, I worked with my colleagues to respond to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that effectively allows for racial profiling and abuse against people of color, non-English speakers, and working-class community members. It was a grounding reminder that racial solidarity remains at the core of our work, and that our commitment to advocate for policies that protect, create, expand, and remove barriers to opportunities for undocumented individuals remains undeterred.

This Latinx Heritage Month calls on us to celebrate the rich diversity and contributions of Latinx communities. But celebrating our heritage also means fighting for it. To celebrate Latinx Heritage Month is to stand boldly and unapologetically against racism and the silencing of Black, Asian, and Pacific Islander immigrants, because an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.

Though the future remains uncertain, we must also know that we are not alone. Our struggles today are interconnected with the issues fought by past and current farmworkers, immigrant family businesses, worker rights organizers, and civil rights activists. It is the responsibility of every one of us to refuse to be silent, holding elected officials at all levels accountable to the people they serve, invest back into our communities (see mutual aid networks and this fundraiser by Yesi & Juli’s Tiendita!), and advance work that advocates for all immigrants.

We will rise,
Daniela
