Keeping up with Callie!
[[link removed]]
We have been moving through Upper and Northern Michigan. Along the way, we’ve sat with business owners after-hours, listened to teachers after long days in the classroom, heard from nurses finishing their shifts, and met retirees who still call this place home. Each conversation carries the same current: change is in the air .
With your help, new leadership will represent Michigan’s 1st Congressional District.
This newsletter is our way of sharing where we have been and where we are going. There is no greater calling than fighting for the people and communities that we love - for our home.
Thank you for filling this campaign with grit, heart, and hope.
Here’s to a happier and healthier future, together!
We Need Your Help
Tonight is our first filing deadline since we announced our campaign in July. Can you chip in and make a donation? Every donation counts. Each dollar will support a volunteer walking through the door, a game shop we visit, a town hall we will host, face-to-face conversations we will organize, and the community stories we will share across the largest congressional district in the country. [[link removed]]
You know the stakes. You know who we are working to replace in Congress. Chip in today and help us replace him with YOUR voice. We need to raise $5,000 by 9/30 at 11:59 p.m. to hit our goal!

Issue Spotlight: Healthcare
As Congress likely shuts down because Jack Bergman refuses to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies or reverse Medicaid cuts, we hosted a conversation with the media and the public about the impact on healthcare insurance and rural hospital care access and affordability.
Joining Callie to discuss the district’s hospital closures, rising premium costs, and shortages of doctors, nurses, and dentists that lead to longer waits and gaps in critical services was Jamie Mills, a licensed consultant for health benefits, and Richard Douglass, a social epidemiologist with more than five decades of experience in public health, health policy, and medical history. Alpena News, Michigan NPR, the Mining Journal, St. Ignace News, and others joined.
Without the ACA, more than 300,000 people in Michigan, including many here in the 1st District, will see their health care costs rise by as much as 70 percent.
This means higher costs for preventive care, reproductive and maternal health, prescription drugs, mental health services, and emergency care. Families across our communities would be forced to make impossible choices between health and financial stability.
This is part of the larger conversation we are having in the district. We have to expand medical transportation for rural seniors. We must increase telehealth services and broadband reliability. And we must be intentional about launching programs to incentivize medical professionals to serve our rural neighborhoods.
That is what our campaign is about. We can do better, and together we will.

Callie on the road 🚗
[[link removed]] Over the past month, I have been hitting the road, visiting towns all across the district.
This month, I visited our neighbors in Charlevoix, Traverse City, Gaylord, Cedar, Harbor Springs, and Northport. Here, I stressed the importance of making healthcare both affordable and accessible. Right now, too many working families in our district are burdened by rising costs and forced into difficult choices. We can build a system that ensures quality care without financial hardship.

Labor and Delivery Unit Closes in Ironwood and Press Brief [[link removed]]
In Ironwood, MI, the labor and delivery unit was forced to shut down due to low staffing and impending Medicaid cuts. Patients will now have to drive another 45 miles to receive care in Wisconsin. Ironwood Story Here [[link removed]]
Unless something is done to reverse the effects of Medicaid cuts that Jack Bergman voted for, closures like these will only continue to get worse and spread. Today, I talked with reporters about issues in healthcare and how we can address them (see above for press brief).
