Dear friend of IDP,

I am reaching out from the Immigrant Defense Project (IDP) to update you and thank you for your support - whether by following us, sharing our resources, or donating. Your support powers our work to safeguard fundamental rights which are under attack in this critical moment - thank you!

At the Immigrant Defense Project, we are unequivocally committed to a basic principle: all human beings deserve basic dignity - and nobody is disposable. And no matter how much money we have, where we live, or where we may have come from, our lives have value.

As you may know, IDP was founded following the 1996 passage of harsh laws that vastly expanded the government’s power to arrest, imprison and deport our non-citizen neighbors on a massive scale. Through six federal administrations, we have fought the expulsion of immigrants and the use of the deeply racist systems of policing and incarceration to target our neighbors. Now, under this Trump administration, we know our work and mission are more critical than ever.

Last December, I was elated to personally call a community member, Pablo, and tell him that the Governor of New York was granting him a pardon ([link removed]) that will protect him from deportation. Pablo came to the U.S. in 1982 and is a retired public servant of his town, where he is deeply rooted and surrounded by family. Yet, as a result of decades-old convictions which were long resolved, he lived in fear of deportation for over 20 years. IDP’s work to analyze his case, facilitate filing a pardon and advocate with elected officials and other stakeholders moved the Governor to make the right call. Just weeks before the last presidential inauguration, Pablo and his family felt immense relief ([link removed]) .

Unfortunately, thousands of New Yorkers have been less fortunate than Pablo and have already been harmed by this federal administration in its first year. We’re rising to the challenge of the moment to protect our immigrant communities. Our priorities in the year ahead include:
* Providing critical legal support to protect thousands of community members and their loved ones contacting our hotline, as well as analysis and assistance to immigration advocates and public defenders
* Protecting and fighting for local and state sanctuary laws in New York and beyond
* Documenting ICE raids and tactics and developing robust community Know Your Rights education and defense strategies
* Challenging inhumane immigration laws through impact litigation and policy advocacy
* Moving hearts and minds to favorably shift the public narrative with strategic communications

We are fighting for a system that humanizes people and centers fairness, freedom, and opportunity. And we have learned one thing through this work: we cannot do it alone. We do it with community members and their loved ones, with partners and within coalitions, and with the support of allies like you.

As of this month, individual giving has become one of IDP’s most critical sources of revenue and we are deeply moved by this outpouring of support. In a quickly changing climate of uncertainty, this allows us to do our work in a way that is nimble and robust.

If you’re able and you haven’t already, we hope you will consider joining us as a monthly donor.

Thank you for your support and partnership!

Yasmine Farhang

Executive Director
