While we live in fear of gun violence, the gun industry is getting giveaways at the expense of public safety and even our national security. Just yesterday, the Trump Administration rescinded a Department of Commerce rule on U.S. gun exports abroad intended to reduce the risk that firearms are diverted from legal to illegal commerce, and then used to commit crime and fuel violence and terror around the world. The reason they gave? To be "less burdensome" on the firearms industry. Scrapping this rule is a huge giveaway to the gun industry, which is desperate to reopen foreign markets to offset falling U.S. gun sales. And while President Trump claims he's taking on violent foreign cartels, this decision makes it easier for them to stockpile arms. Why this is important: Without proper oversight and controls, U.S.-made guns can end up in the hands of foreign drug cartels, terrorists, and other criminals, where they are used to commit crime, stoke political violence, and foment regional instability.
