John, this is a Fourth of July unlike any we've experienced before.
As we celebrate our country's 244th birthday, Americans everywhere are reckoning with the fact that when the Founders declared "all men are created equal" on July 4th, 1776, there were many people who weren't included.
As we continue to grapple with a pandemic, more and more Americans are also standing up to demand justice and calling on our institutions and our leaders to truly create a "more perfect union" for ALL of us.
I am committed to doing the hard work of addressing these deep-seated injustices by acknowledging our past, listening to those who bear the pain of injustice, and taking action in the present to change our future.
As we celebrate Independence Day this weekend - hopefully in a more socially distanced way than we usually do - I hope you will join me in remembering what the Founders taught us: that a government gets its power "from the consent of the governed."
When we participate in democracy and demand that our voices are heard - whether in the halls of Congress or in our communities - we ensure that our government answers directly to us.
Have a safe and happy Indepence Day! (And please wear a mask.)
