Folks, by all appearances the federal government is heading towards a shutdown starting at 12:01 am tonight.
I have a lot of thoughts, and I wanted to share some of them with you:
1. Government shutdowns are reckless for our economy and the millions of people around the country who rely on government services every day.
2. When Republicans have a triple majority (like now)... they own what happens in Congress!
3. If the GOP needs some Democratic votes to pass a funding bill, they need to offer a funding bill that Democrats will vote for. It’s that simple.
4. Using people’s livelihoods and our national economy as bargaining chips to get Democrats to vote for a very bad bill is cruel and spineless.
5. Holding the federal government hostage to get what you want does not count as governing.
6. Trying to pin a shutdown on Democrats because we wouldn’t cave to irrational, reckless demands does not count as an excuse.
7. Our constituents have been pretty darn clear that as much as no one wants a government shutdown, NO ONE wants Democrats to just capitulate.
8. Trump is the only president in the past 40 years who’s had a government shutdown when his own party controls Congress — and he’s had two of them.
9. It is *painfully* clear that if we want a functional government, we can’t keep letting Republicans win majorities.
That last one is incredibly important. Right now, the balance of power in the House is 213 Democrats (actually 214, but Speaker Johnson refuses to swear in our newest Member – more on that in a future email) to 219 Republicans. Their majority is razor-thin — and incredibly far from a mandate.
In just over a year, we have the chance to take it back, and get some real power to fight bad GOP policies and MAGA extremism. But we need to be ready.
That’s why I’m raising funds right now to help flip the House in 2026. Many campaigns are won or lost well before Election Day, so there’s no time to waste. Will you join me?
Please — pitch in whatever you can today to support my efforts to flip the House next year! [[link removed]]

I really appreciate anything you can give. And if you can’t give today, that’s OK too — thanks for reading and for being on this team.
More updates to come on the shutdown situation and what Democrats are working on.
