John,

I hope you and your family are together, safe, and enjoying the 4th of July!

I wanted to send a quick note to wish you a happy Independence Day. Whether you’re reveling with fireworks, a barbecue, or some time with the family, please celebrate safely – and wear your mask!

Please also remember the history of this day: a group of imperfect people coming together to declare their freedom from tyranny, their belief in self-government, and their aspirations for a prosperous nation. This grand experiment continues 244 years later – and it is still a work in progress. For the United States to meet the promise of today — that we all are created equal and should have equal rights— it requires our continued engagement, thoughtful debate, and fearless commitment.

Happy Independence Day!
