Averting a Government Shutdown

For decades, elected officials have come to Washington, D.C. ringing the alarm on our national debt. Unfortunately, the consensus among too many in Washington is that they’d rather see President Trump fail than work together to keep the government functioning and funded responsibly.

On September 19, House Republicans passed a clean, seven-week CR that simply extends government funding and allows our troops, Social Security dependents, and Border Patrol and TSA agents to be paid and keep the government open. Instead of voting for this simple extension to keep the lights on and pay our federal workers, the majority of Washington Democrats have decided to shut the government down unless we force taxpayers to fund health care for illegal immigrants, roll back tax cuts for working and middle-class families, and strip rural hospitals of their funding from the Working Families Tax Cuts. This is a nonstarter.

I understand that some in Washington prefer to grandstand and try to score political points rather than do what’s best for the country, but it is time to stop the political theater and work together to get our fiscal house in order. Congress can and should do its part to get our spending under control by returning to regular order and passing appropriations bills.

Discussing the Farm Economy

I joined Jeff Nalley on the AgriPulse Open Mic podcast to talk about the state of the farm economy and the challenges facing producers across the Big First. We discussed the need for targeted relief for the nation’s farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers, the importance of expanding trade opportunities, and how the Working Families Tax Cut is providing long-overdue certainty for the agricultural community. There’s more work to be done, and I’m optimistic that we will pass a Farm Bill 2.0 before the end of the year.

Congressional Internship Opportunities

My first job on Capitol Hill was an internship with a Kansas congressman. Every year, I offer the same experience to students across the Big First. Working in Congress is a unique opportunity for students to learn about the impacts of public policy, the role congressional offices play in helping Kansans on a daily basis, and to learn about the legislative process.

The application for spring internships in my office is open, and the deadline to apply is October 24, 2025. If you know a college student who would benefit from an internship in my office, encourage them to apply today.

Meetings of the Week

Last week, I met with Kansans across the Big First working in agriculture, education, infrastructure, and manufacturing. I visited with leaders at Hannebaum Grain Company, toured the Salina Airport Authority, and joined Dodge City Community College and Kansas State University for the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding to expand educational opportunities. I also stopped by Pepsi-Cola of Manhattan to hear about their work and impact in the region. I’m always glad for the opportunity to visit face to face and hear directly from the folks building a stronger Kansas. Thanks for the meetings!
