John,

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness -- That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among (people), deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

These immortal words were approved by the Continental Congress 244 years ago today, after a year of war against the most powerful empire on the face of the earth. In his diary for July 4, 1776, the tyrant King George wrote that “nothing of consequence” happened today. How wrong he was.

Our history as a people, as a nation, has been one of countless struggles to include more people living right here in the United States in this founding vision. At the same time, millions around the world have been inspired by these words put on paper and ratified 244 years ago today.

COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd show that we have not yet reached the promised land that Dr. King so eloquently described and sacrificed for. Deeply entrenched, systemic inequality still keeps us from the promise of a nation with “liberty and justice for all”- where everyone has the opportunity to succeed, everyone’s rights are real and respected, and where our leaders listen to us, not powerful special interests or dark money.

This July 4 is like no other. People are suffering in our nation. But in our best tradition, countless people and communities have come together to work towards opportunity, liberty, and justice for all.

Even in this crisis, the President and many so-called leaders have used hatred, fear, and lies to tear us apart. This is not new in our 244-year history. But our common decency, love and compassion, our Constitution with its separation of powers, checks and balances, and the rule of law have helped us build unity that brings us together. In this current crisis, we have already seen so many people come together and work to reclaim our communities and our democracy.

I am running for the US Congress -- the People’s House -- because I believe in the power of democracy. I believe in our nation and in “we the people.” My record shows that I know how to bring people together across the partisan divide and use science to solve problems we face. I believe that by coming together, listening to one another and using our creativity and compassion, we will reclaim our democracy, our communities, and build a better future for all.

By working together we can finally make the words of our Declaration of Independence a reality for all.
