World Communion Sunday invites Christians across the globe to gather at one table—lifting up our shared faith, dismantling barriers to unity, and committing ourselves to justice, peace, and the flourishing of all people. It is a day to reflect on what true communion means in a world scarred by poverty, war, and division, and to embody God’s call for equity and love in tangible ways.
For this World Communion Sunday, the Kairos Center is sharing a powerful new liturgical resource created by Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis for Synod School this past summer, hosted by the Synod of Lakes and Prairies of the Presbyterian Church (USA). This week-long gathering brought together more than 600 families from hundreds of congregations across the Midwest and beyond. Throughout the week, participants worshiped with prayers, liturgies, rituals, and songs from We Pray Freedom: Liturgies and Rituals from the Freedom Church of the Poor, sparking an overwhelming response and confirming the deep hunger for worship rooted in justice.
We invite you to use this Synod School Liturgical Resource in your own community as a way to connect worship life with ministries of justice. The Thursday Synod School service was a communion service, offering prayers, liturgies, and songs that you can draw from for your communion worship this Sunday—or any time your community gathers at Christ’s table.
