Our nation is hurting right now through the pandemic, economic recession, healthcare crisis, and racial strife. We the People of the United States have an opportunity to push back against the forces that want to divide us, instill fear in us, and infect us with apathy. The beauty of America is not merely in the words of our Constitution or the colors of our Flag—but in how we as Americans unite for justice and uphold the ideals of the Constitution and the Flag.

What does it mean to be American?

Is it a Federal Court having to order you to stop caging children?

Is it promoting Nazi ideology and retweeting "white power" videos?

Is it a $585B increase for America's billionaires while 40M Americans lose their jobs?

These atrocities are the antithesis of America, and our Constitution—yet they are happening as we speak due to deliberate and malicious choices made by those in power. These are the atrocities of human abuse, wealth and income inequality, and tyranny that our nation's Founders sought to escape and prevent. And imperfect as our Founders were, they wrote into our Constitution to always strive to form a more perfect Union.

As we celebrate the 4th of July, let us embrace this principle of forming that more perfect Union by fighting with compassion through action, upholding justice supreme, and living a life of service to our neighbors—whoever they are or wherever they're from.

On this Fourth of July, I ask you to persist like Harriet, resist like Rosa, seek justice by any means necessary like Malcolm, and dream like Martin—for that more perfect union.
