Last week, I was honored to present Lakeland’s A.J. Slater with the Carnegie Medal, North America’s highest civilian honor for heroism, at my district office. In November, A.J. came upon a fiery crash on the shores of Lake Parker and, without hesitation, ran toward the burning vehicle to rescue two children trapped inside. He pulled 3-year-old Walker Wills to safety, saving his life, and then made a second attempt to free 5-year-old JoLynn. Tragically, the flames and smoke overtook the car before she could be rescued, and A.J. suffered severe burns in his courageous effort. His bravery and humility inspire us all, and as the first known Carnegie Medal recipient from Polk County, he represents the very best of our community.
