News from Representative Teresa Leger Fernández

Dear Friend,

The government shuts down at midnight, and I am in DC fighting to keep it open, keep health care premiums low, and protect Americans from a Trump shutdown. Meanwhile, Republicans aren’t even in DC. Yet they’re demanding a spending bill that does nothing to stop the massive health care cost increases that their own policies have caused.

Republicans control every branch of government – and they’re using that power to gamble with your health care. Trump’s health care cuts are already closing rural hospitals, spiking premiums, and could strip coverage from 15 million Americans.

Across New Mexico:

  • 46,000 New Mexicans will pay more if Republicans let the Affordable Care Act premium tax credits expire.
  • A family of four earning $64,000 a year would see their annual premiums rise by $2,571 – an increase of 182%.
  • 120,000 New Mexicans will lose coverage entirely because of Republican cuts to Medicaid.

New Mexico will be especially hurt during a shutdown. Approximately 30,000 civilian federal employees live and work here. They are our friends, our neighbors, our family – and their paychecks are on the line.

This fight is about more than just keeping the lights on. It’s about protecting our health care. Trump and Republicans have created a health care crisis that will only get worse if the government shuts down this week.

I am fighting to lower your health care costs. To keep the government open. And to protect Americans from Trump’s attacks on health care. Saving health care for millions of Americans is our red line.

We’ll keep you updated every step of the way. In the meantime, if you or your family are facing higher premiums, losing coverage, or struggling with medical bills, please share your story with me at fernandez.house.gov/story. Your voices make our fight stronger.

Together, we protect what we love – our families, our communities, and our health.

Sincerely,
