Lost: Curiosity, hope, sanity

What this undercover investigator in Japan told us broke my heart. This is how she described what happens to hens as they age inside a cage:

“The chickens in the cage were frequently sham-dustbathing. They flapped their wings repeatedly in their small cages and shook their feathers as they made gestures with their beaks to collect [what] was not actually there. ‘Sham’ dustbathing did not clean their feathers or their bodies, nor did it remove parasites.

“As the days passed, the chickens became dirtier and dirtier. I remember that ‘sham’ dustbathing that was common in the younger chicken barns was rarely seen in older barns. The older chickens seemed to have lost their curiosity, their hope, and their sanity.

“A cage is not a place for an animal to live.”

Now is the time to triple your impact and help ensure that corporations around the world hear us clearly when we say: A cage is not a place for an animal to live.

For the animals,
