Weekly Training Digest - Advance Your Skills With Training And Resources

THIS WEEK'S TL;DR:

Airing live this October: learn to track climate rollbacks and cover women impacted by incarceration; deadline ahead for new managers; master AI in media with tools, ethics and strategy; last chance to work for impact
Climate policy changes hit households in your coverage area directly through utility costs, while nearly half of American women face the complex reality of encountering the criminal justice system.

Your readers feel the impact of federal policy shifts and mass incarceration. Deepen your understanding of these topics so you can cover them with the nuance they require.

Poynter’s upcoming webinars provide you the resources and frameworks you need. Tune in live to free sessions in October designed to enrich your reporting:

  • Oct. 16: The Beat Academy is back to teach journalists how to track federal climate policy rollbacks and their local impacts. You’ll get training on Atlas database tools and hear how to Clean Economy Tracker informed local coverage.

  • Oct. 23: Incarcerated Women delves into the physical, emotional and financial impact of incarceration on women and their families. Walk away from the first part of this webinar series with concrete story ideas to pursue related to the impact of the issue on women.

  • Oct. 30: Women with Incarcerated Family Members delivers topical trends from researchers, tips for ethical reporting and guidance on building trust with sources who have incarcerated loved ones.
Participants who watch both webinars part of the Women and Prison initiative become eligible to apply for five reporting grants of $10,000 each, funded by Just Impact Advisors.

“It was surprising to me to learn that most of the women currently in jails have not been convicted of a crime, but are instead awaiting trial. More than half are mothers of children who are minors. That also has a ripple effect," said Fernanda Camarena, Poynter faculty and program lead.

"As journalists, it's important to understand the flaws in the system that have created this problem, and all of the ways it affects our society.”
