John,
We’re just hours away from Donald Trump’s and his congressional minions’ government shutdown.
We’re demanding Congress hold strong and only pass a government funding bill that includes explicit requirements on how the Trump regime must spend congressionally appropriated funds.
Trump’s Office of Management and Budget Director, Russell Vought, has threatened to begin firing federal workers as soon as the clock strikes midnight. But that is nothing new for an administration that has already fired thousands of federal workers at random―gutting investments in public health, food assistance for local communities, access to education for children with disabilities, and more―while dismantling the parts of the federal government they don’t like.
We’re demanding Congress reject a government funding bill that fails to address our health care crisis or rein in this unhinged administration. Click here to send a message to your senators and representative now.
Before leaving on recess, House Republicans passed a partisan government funding bill that ignored Democrats’ demands. Now they have extended their recess, refusing to return before the funding deadline. Speaker Johnson and his caucus are ensuring that there will be a shutdown. The Senate failed to pass the House’s partisan GOP bill―generating more votes for the Democrats’ bill than the Republicans’, while both failed to receive the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. And instead of coming together to craft a bipartisan package to avert a shutdown, Senate Majority Leader Thune is yet again pushing to vote on the House’s partisan CR―despite the fact that not even a majority of senators supported this plan one-and-a-half weeks ago.1
Back in March, Democrats agreed to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government running, but since then, the Trump regime has continued freezing and withholding hundreds of billions of dollars of funding from our communities. Bipartisan laws to appropriate federal funds are meaningless if Trump is allowed to freeze, cancel, or rescind at will.
If Congress does not reclaim its power of the purse and require Trump to disperse congressionally appropriated funds as required by law, then senators and representatives must reject this government funding bill. Click here to send a message now.
Demanding Congress assert its constitutional authority is one urgent issue. Health care is another. One crucial example: if Congress does not vote now to prevent the ACA’s expanded premium tax credit from expiring, in the coming weeks millions of Americans will get notices that their health insurance premiums will rise, and 4.8 million are expected to become uninsured in 2026.2
Together, we’re holding the Trump regime accountable and demanding Congress assert its authority―to protect our people and our rights.
With you in this fight,
Deborah Weinstein
