Friends,
Today, in communities across America, we are celebrating the founding of our great democracy.
On July 4, 1776, our Founders carved out a new nation, the likes of which had never been seen before.
Since that day, we’ve witnessed a battle between our highest ideals and our worst instincts. Today that battle plays out in all aspects of our lives—from our response to the coronavirus pandemic to the fight for racial justice.
No good comes from hoarding freedoms and equality. And it is our job as citizens to make our country more fair, more democratic, and more free.
The Americans who for generations have assumed the mantle of forming a more perfect union are just as much Founders as those who signed the Declaration of Independence.
Frederick Douglass. Abraham Lincoln. Susan B. Anthony. Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Margaret Sanger. Harvey Milk. Mae Jemison. Cesar Chavez.
Immigrants like my mother and her parents who survived the Holocaust and arrived in America in search of a better life.
Young people in the streets protesting and demanding action on racial justice, climate change, gun safety, and women’s rights.
Ordinary people who are stepping forward to accomplish extraordinary things—renewing the strength and hope of our great nation.
Team, all of us are Founders.
So today, as we celebrate the founding of America, let’s also find the courage and energy to keep building a more perfect union.
Let’s push back on those trying to strip citizens of their rights.
Let’s dismantle systemic racism in our law enforcement and criminal justice system.
And let’s improve health care for those who need it most, especially in the face of this global health crisis.
This is what it means to be a Founder, and this is what today is all about.
