This week, President Trump is unlawfully federalizing the Oregon National Guard against the city of Portland. This move came after I spoke with him on the phone and made it very clear that Oregon neither wants nor needs military servicemembers on our streets. 

Portland is not a war zone. There is no insurrection. We're making real progress to improve public safety and livability in Portland – and there's still more work to be done. But Trump's militarization of Portland will only create chaos and conflict. 

On the morning President Trump posted his plans to social media, Oregonians were enjoying Portland – shopping at farmers markets, taking their children to parks, and enjoying a beautiful fall day. There is no need (or legal justification!) for military troops in Portland or anywhere in Oregon. 

Let’s be clear about what this is: An authoritarian overreach, a political stunt that uses our servicemembers as pawns, and an attempt to undermine our local democracy and the rule of law. What happens here in Portland will be a model for what he tries next. We simply cannot allow this to stand.
