Dear John,
Republicans may control all three branches of government, but it’s become clear that they can’t keep the government open without the Democrats’ help. As of this morning, it looks like the government will shut down at midnight.
This is a make-or-break moment for the pro-Democracy movement. On the one hand, Americans hate government shutdowns, and rightfully so. Restoring competence to government is one of our primary missions, and there’s nothing competent about a government that’s not even open for business.
On the other hand, Congressional Democrats may not get a better chance to hold Trump accountable and actually do something before the midterms. And it’s not like Trump’s authoritarian takeover isn’t providing plenty of calamities worth shutting the government down over.
What do you think? Do you think Democrats need to seize the moment, or do you think a shutdown would only make things worse? And if you are pro-shutdown, what issue do you think the Democrats should make this shutdown about?
