John,
When Trump and his corrupt border czar Tom Homan kicked off their extreme immigration crackdown this year, I immediately knew what it meant: pain and suffering for thousands of good people who deserve a chance at a better life — and maximum chaos and dysfunction for the rest of us.
And that is exactly what we’ve seen: Constitutional rights trampled, legal immigrants and even U.S. citizens detained without cause, physically harmed, and abused with no accountability — due process discarded.
We can’t keep on like this. We have to send a message that change is coming and we can stop this if we fight for it together.
This is personal for me. I come from a Latino immigrant family. I am the first of my family born in America. And while English may be my second language, and I have lived the immigrant experience, I know in my bones what it means to be a freedom-loving American, to wear the uniform, to serve, to put the Constitution above politics.
And I know we need change. We need to be better.
Our freedoms, the values that we call American, and our 238 year old experiment in democracy depend on us right now. That’s why I am called to this fight, on a deep level, and I am fired up and ready to do what it takes to win and to fix this mess.
