This shutdown is not inevitable. It is the result of choices, of a refusal to prioritize the needs of ordinary Americans.

John,

As we head toward tomorrow's deadline, I want to share some thoughts about the looming government shutdown. Long story short, this could have been avoided.

Every day, Americans expect their government to solve problems and keep our country running. In a normal job, if you fail to do your part, you get held accountable. In Congress, Republicans have abandoned that responsibility. Their focus is on pleasing Donald Trump, no matter the cost to the American people.

Seniors, children, working families, and millions of Americans will feel the consequences of Republican inaction. In Delaware alone, around 6,000 federal workers could be affected, not to mention the millions across the country who rely on programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and veterans' services that will be disrupted.

I am a firm believer that we can solve problems by negotiating in good faith and putting people over politics. Unfortunately, Trump and my Republican counterparts have cancelled previous negotiations. Closed doors and political games do not serve democracy. By refusing to collaborate, they are betraying the very oath they took to represent their constituents.

This shutdown is the direct result of Republican choices, of a refusal to prioritize the needs of Americans.

The American people deserve better. Families should not have to wonder if they can put food on the table or pay their bills because of political theater. The federal workers in our communities should not have to worry about whether they will receive a paycheck for the work they have already done.

This shutdown should not be happening. But here we are. I believe in the resilience and decency of our country, and I know so many Americans are doing their best every day despite the dysfunction in Washington. It is time to hold those responsible accountable. The Republican Party must fund the government, put people over politics, and stop putting our country at risk.

Stand with me and make your voice heard. Sign this petition to tell Congress that putting politics over people is unacceptable and that the American people demand action to fund our government now >>

Thank you for standing up for our country,

Chris
