As the LGBTQ Youth Population Doubles, Number of Bills Targeting Them Triples -- The 74
John,
The Movement Advancement Project just released a devastating new report, and the numbers are impossible to ignore.
In 2020, 77 anti-LGBTQ bills targeted young people’s rights in schools and health care. By 2023, that number had tripled — with nearly 300 introduced every year since. The relentless wave of legislation is taking a staggering toll: when the escalation began, 90% of LGBTQ people ages 13 to 24 said politics was harming their well-being, up from 71% just a year earlier.
That’s why we need your help right now. Our end-of-quarter deadline is just days away, and we must raise the resources to elect more LGBTQ+ leaders who will repeal these hateful bills and protect our kids. Chip in now to help us hit our end-of-quarter goal!
These bills are cruel. They strip away in-school protections, ban access to health care, and leave LGBTQ youth in crisis. Yet research shows that even one supportive educator can reduce rates of suicide, anxiety, and depression. For the almost 2 million teens who now identify as LGBTQ — nearly double the number in 2020 — this support is literally life-saving.
But here’s the truth: the consequences of these bills are clear, and they must be repealed. And the only way to repeal them is to elect leaders who will stand up, speak out, and protect LGBTQ youth. If you can pitch in today, we appreciate it.
Our kids are under attack. We owe them leaders who will defend their future.
Thank you for supporting this essential work,
