Our country has a painful, difficult history with race and chronic inequality. Together, we need to fight for a government that is responsive to the American people, including protecting our right to vote and fighting for a future that leaves no one behind.
We have a lot of work to do, as a nation, to make today's reality match the meaning behind the Declaration of Independence's famous words:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Today, on the 4th of July, let's take the opportunity to consider what we have accomplished as a nation—and the hard work that lies ahead.
John, today, on the 4th of July, can you chip in $4 to demand Congress take action to lift up marginalized communities and those most in need?
Clearly, we have yet to achieve the liberty and equality that was promised in the Declaration of Independence. These must not be aspirational goals, but instead words that demand a commitment from each passing generation. Progress is not easy. But together, we can advance our shared values through collective action and by electing leaders who will join with us in our calls for racial, social and economic justice.
We have an opportunity to do exactly that in just four months. This November marks one of the most consequential elections in our nation's history. We will have an opportunity to cast our ballots, and express our shared values to fight for struggling families, the poor and the vulnerable.
