Friend,
Happy Independence Day!
The Fourth of July is a day for good food, fireworks, and -- if you can do so safely -- time with family and a few friends.
It is also offers us an important opportunity to reflect on our nation’s values, our history, and our promise.
I am so proud to be an American. Our core values are that all people are created equal and that our creator endowed each of us with certain rights, including life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. And in furtherance of those values, we formed a government of, by and for the people.
Much of our history and growth has been defined by people rightfully demanding their fair share of this vision after having been denied political and economic power. And through painful and traumatic periods, they achieved crowning victories — the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, civil rights, and LGBTQ rights, among many others. But there are no final victories in a democracy. Even today, each one of us must be vigilant in defending these past gains and dedicated to the work of forming a more perfect union.
I’d welcome hearing what the the Fourth of July means to you. And I hope you enjoy the burgers and BBQ!
Have a safe and joyful weekend,
Josh
