Friend,
There’s a whole lot of finger-pointing happening right now in Washington with regard to the looming shutdown. Unfortunately, the most recent meeting at the White House failed to result in a deal.
Lost in all of the political back and forth is an acknowledgment that this fight could have a real impact on your family.
At the end of the year, the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced tax credits are set to expire. That means that when open enrollment begins on November 1, low- and middle-income families in our community will see rates they simply cannot afford.
Plus, drastic Medicaid cuts will go into effect at the end of the year. In anticipation of those cuts, providers are already laying off staff [[link removed]] , maternity wards are being shuttered [[link removed]] in rural hospitals, and reproductive healthcare is becoming out of reach [[link removed]] .
That’s why Democrats have drawn a line in the sand, refusing to support a spending package that doesn’t address the rising cost of healthcare for working families.
Republicans seem unwilling to budge. And though the President told Republicans in Congress, “ don’t bother [[link removed]] ” negotiating with those of us on the other side of the aisle, the GOP will need some Democratic support in the Senate to pass the budget.
I’ll continue fighting for a budget that lowers healthcare costs for your family, and I’ll keep you posted on how the negotiations play out.
