Team,
Today we celebrate the birth of our country. When the founders signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, they had a vision for a different type of country, one where every citizen's voice would be heard.
Thankfully, the definition of "citizen" has changed to be vastly more inclusive since the Founding Fathers' days. While there is still a great deal of work to be done to uphold the ideals of true independence for all Americans, it's work I'm proud to be doing on behalf of the 11th District in the halls of Congress.
In just the past few days I have advocated for...
- The Justice in Policing Act, which would prohibit police from using chokeholds, create a national registry to track police misconduct, and ban certain no-knock warrants.
- The Equality Act, which would expand nondiscrimination protections to millions of LGBTQ+ Americans when it comes to healthcare, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, and more.
- The Washington, D.C. Admission Act, which would make DC the 51st state -- because taxation without representation is still not okay 243 years later!
So, yes, this 4th of July will differ from our usual Independence Day celebrations -- our favorite parades and neighborhood BBQs have been canceled -- but the pride we have in our nation and our dedication to creating a more inclusive, safe, and equitable future for all our neighbors have not waned.
Today, in the celebration of our first revolution, we ask you to keep fighting against injustice and, please, keep wearing a mask -- Happy 4th of July!
In service,
Congressman Gerry Connolly
