This week, I joined FEMA officials in Hales Corners to discuss important federal disaster relief.
On September 11, President Trump approved $29.8 million in federal relief for families affected by historic floodingin August.
This initial funding is now available to Wisconsin families. If you or someone you know was affected by these storms, you can apply for relief at DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 1-800-621-3362, or by visiting the Milwaukee County FEMA Resource page here.
Spending in DC
Earlier this month, the House passed a continuing resolution (CR) to prevent a lapse in funding at the end of the month. This stopgap measure allows Congress to continue working through the appropriations process, build a responsible federal budget, and eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse.
Democrats in the Senate, led by Chuck Schumer, chose to oppose the CR passed by the House. Instead, some Democrats in Washington are demanding we increase spending by $1.5 trillion and roll back important reforms to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse, like:
Ending taxpayer funding of healthcare for illegal immigrants
Requiring able-bodied, adults without young children to work, volunteer, or receive job training for 80 hours a month to receive Medicaid
Rolling back tools to strengthen Medicaid eligibility integrity
The Senate will need to pass the resolution offered by the House to prevent a lapse in funding at the end of the month. As of today, the Senate has not scheduled a vote on this proposal.
On Friday, I joined Benjamin Yount on 1130WISN to talk about the need for the Senate to end their brinksmanship, to pass this CR, and to reform spending in Washington.
This includes legislation I introduced alongside Senator Ron Johnson to end government shutdowns once and for all. Our legislation, the Eliminate Government Shutdowns Act will provide for an automatic clean continuing resolution at the end of a fiscal year. This would allow Congress to finalize the appropriations process without a lapse in funding.
