Hi John, There’s a retention election happening for Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court next month. If you don’t know what that is, that’s okay — most people don’t, even many Pennsylvanians. In fact, Republicans are banking on people not paying close attention to this off-cycle election, where voters essentially have to decide to rehire their current justices for another term by voting “yes” or “no” in November. As one GOP operative put it, “This is a political consultant’s dream, because your message is just one thing, and that’s, ‘No.’” They’re pouring money into this race because they know if they win, it will open the floodgates for right-wing policies and anti-democracy measures in Pennsylvania. We have our work cut out for us in this race, and it’s why we need your support. Make a donation to help the NDRC elect Democracy Defenders in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and beyond while keeping up the fight against mid-decade GOP power grabs.
Another reason Republicans might be so dead set on winning this Supreme Court retention election in Pennsylvania? Back in 2018, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court struck down the GOP’s congressional gerrymander. The courts in the past have always been a backstop to prevent the partisan, anti-democracy extremism we see behind egregiously gerrymandered maps. The modern Republican Party is doing its best to change that by changing the face of the judiciary at all levels of government. That’s why it’s so essential that we fight to protect the pro-democracy majority on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. We must preserve our backstop in the courts so that Republicans don’t even think for a second about trying to force through an extreme gerrymander in this key battleground. Thanks for standing with us, Claire Low
