Federal Agencies Switching to Electronic Payments

Starting September 30, 2025, federal agencies will stop issuing paper checks to cut costs and reduce delays, following Trump’s Executive Order on Modernizing Payments.

Most Americans already receive benefits electronically and need to take no action. Those still getting paper checks for Social Security, Veterans benefits, or other programs must switch to electronic payments by:

  • Enrolling in direct deposit through their agency, at GoDirect.gov, or by calling the Electronic Payment Solution Center
  • Signing up for a Direct Express Debit Mastercard, a Treasury-sponsored card for receiving benefits electronically
