Hey Friend,
For many of us, the Fourth of July is a time to take off work, gather with friends and family, and celebrate the birth of our nation. After all, it was 244 years ago today that the thirteen American colonies formally declared their independence from Great Britain's King George III.
This was a bold act of resistance. Their dream was simple: build a new nation where all are free to live and worship (or not) as they choose. For many of us, today is a time to reflect on how far we've come and celebrate the hard-won freedoms we've secured since then.
But the Fourth of July was not "Independence Day" for everyone. For Black Americans, indigenous communities, people of color, women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and countless others, this promise of freedom has not yet been fulfilled.
So what today calls for is more than virtual or socially-distanced BBQs. It's a time to reflect on how far we've come, how far we still need to go, and to celebrate that spirit of resistance that has come alive again in our streets and online. Once again, it is time to acknowledge those who are still waiting for their own "Independence Day," and fight tooth-and-nail to secure the justice that has been denied to them for entirely too long.
The fight continues -- and I'm so glad that you're a part of it, friend.
Stay safe,
Donald
