Without passage of a funding bill or short-term Continuing Resolution, the government will shut down at 12:01 AM on Wednesday, October 1. Yet House Republicans aren’t even in Washington to do their jobs. Speaker Mike Johnson cancelled this week’s votes and sent his members home. Meanwhile, President Trump and his administration have already been shutting down the government for nine months – gutting agencies, sowing chaos, and slashing services. Now, they’re using the threat of a full shutdown to double down on their extreme agenda. Instead of negotiating, Trump and the GOP are holding families and federal workers hostage. They rammed through their disastrous health care cuts this summer, and unless Affordable Care Act tax credits are renewed, premiums will skyrocket – hitting New Mexicans especially hard. At the same time, Trump’s OMB Director Russell Vought is pushing agencies to use the shutdown to fire federal workers under Project 2025. This is the DOGE playbook in action. While Trump spends his time covering up the Epstein files, going after political opponents, sending troops to U.S. cities, and attacking free speech, he refuses to do the most basic job: keep the government open. Democrats in both the House and Senate are returning to Washington, D.C., to fight for a bipartisan solution. With the clock ticking, House Republicans are missing in action—and the stakes couldn’t be higher. A shutdown would devastate the economy, hurt military families, and put thousands of federal workers in jeopardy.
