John
Well, it's that time again… the end of the fiscal year and time to fund the government by September 30 at 11.59.59. I have called for a plan to fund the government since the spring and pushed it weekly since early summer, but partisan politics has once again held it up. This time, Republicans want to keep the government funded at current levels for the next seven weeks as we finish negotiating the last of the appropriation bills. The House has already passed the bill to keep us open at current levels. Senate Democrats have demanded we roll back the One Big Beautiful Bill, including cutting the new $50 billion rural health care fund, reinstating healthcare benefits for people illegally present in the US and reinstating full funding for Planned Parenthood and much more. That is not even rational.
Keeping the government operating while we negotiate seems like a reasonable position to me. It’s also the same position Democrats took 13 times in the last few years when we got to this same point. But now, Trump is President, and their demands are unrealistic.
It’s down to the final hours. While we talk about the short term, I will keep pushing my Prevent Government Shutdowns Act, which would permanently end the annual shutdown drama. My bill would keep the government operating but force Congress to stay in Washington, DC, to finish the budget work until the government is funded. It's pretty simple. It would hold the American people and federal workers harmless until Congress finished their job.
We'll see how the government shutdown conversations go, but just know that I am directly involved in them as a member of Senate Republican leadership.
Government shutdowns are a waste of tax dollars and are not a good way to solve our issues—they harm our military, veterans, and federal workers rather than the Members of Congress who didn't fund the government in the first place.
I am also working directly to finally clear the logjam of President Trump's nominees for his Executive and Judicial Branch positions after my work to change the Senate rules was successful. We should get completely caught up on the backlog of confirmations this week, finally. The Senate's advice and consent responsibilities are constitutional, but it has to be done efficiently and effectively.
Stay tuned for more updates. I am continuing to work for us and bring Oklahoma common sense to Washington, DC.
Keep praying for the nation.

James Lankford
