Background

Property insurance is at a crossroads. As climate damage worsens, insurance companies are not renewing policies, not paying claims, and raising rates, all as a result of the climate crisis.

Incredibly, most large insurance companies — household names like Geico, State Farm, and Liberty Mutual — are insuring fossil fuel projects and investing in fossil fuel companies at the root of the climate crisis.

That's why Green America and Third Act Upstate New York created the Climate Smart Insurance Directory, which lists companies in every state that do not support fossil fuels. Most companies in the directory are local and regional mutuals that have been serving their communities for decades — proving once again that shopping locally is often best.
