Team,
Before you get going with your day to honor the Fourth of July in whatever safe, fun, and socially-distanced way you have planned, I wanted to take a moment to talk about why Independence Day feels so different this year.
It’s not just that many of us are cancelling our normal celebrations and parades in order to stay safe during the ongoing pandemic. We’re also working towards a new definition of what it means to live in this country.
As protests continue into their second month in response to George Floyd’s death and racial injustice, millions of people in the United States are rethinking what it means to live in a country that boldly declared “all men are created equal” nearly 250 years ago, but that still struggles to live up to that promise.
Last month we honored a different kind of Independence Day on Juneteenth, the day that marks the last enslaved people in America being informed of their freedom—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
Now, on July Fourth, I hope each of us can pause and reflect on what our country can do to fully deliver on the promise of liberty and justice for all.
One thing you can do right now to help ensure our country upholds that promise? Make sure you’re registered to vote in our upcoming elections by clicking here. And encourage your friends, family and neighbors to do the same. [[link removed]]

Remember: on this day in 1776, the authors of the Declaration of Independence wrote “that all men are created equal” – but they also said that governments derive power “ from the consent of the governed .” No matter how we grapple with our national identity right now, voting will always be the most fundamentally American thing we can do.
Wishing you and your family a safe and happy Independence Day,
Sharice
