As we celebrate America’s Independence today, we memorialize so much more than freedom from the tyranny of a distant king. We hold closely to the soaring words from the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” And we remember that the price of such liberty is eternal vigilance, that even such beautiful and lofty ideals require defending every generation. It is our turn. In this time of civic division and attacks on our Founding from within, let us recommit to the towering goals of the Declaration of Independence: Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness are God-given rights for everyone.
