The FAR Act
The Fraud Accountability and Recovery (FAR) Act that I am co-sponsoring with Rep. Finstad addresses the need for additional tools to recover funds by ensuring U.S. foreign assistance is not provided to countries that shelter individuals convicted of defrauding the American people.
Right here in Minnesota, the Feeding Our Future program carried out the largest COVID-19 pandemic fraud scheme in the U.S. - over $250 million that was meant to feed hungry children during the pandemic was stolen.
The Department of Justice has since charged 75 defendants, securing multiple convictions for fraud, bribery, money laundering, and related crimes. At least one defendant transferred stolen funds and property abroad, beyond the reach of U.S. authorities, before attempting to flee. These government funds are coming out of the pockets of Minnesota taxpayers.
This bill will help prevent other countries from allowing entry to those who have stolen from America and will work towards forcing other countries to extradite said criminals and cooperate with the U.S. government. We want to discourage fraud and increase the government's ability to hold lawbreakers accountable. The FAR Act will keep the taxpayers' dollars in Minnesota, where they belong.
