Discussing the Recent Utah Shooting

We condemn the deplorable attack on Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. The Second Amendment cannot be used to attack the First. We must stand united against all forms of political violence.

“Political attacks, especially those involving guns, are a serious threat to our democracy,” says Center co-director Cass Crifasi, PhD, MPH. “The Center will continue our work to prevent tragedies like the shooting at Utah Valley University by advancing proven solutions such as stronger firearm policies, community-based violence prevention, and safeguards that protect both lives and democratic institutions."

“Political violence is a direct threat to the integrity of our democratic institutions,” says Center co-director Josh Horwitz, JD. “No one, regardless of their political affiliation, should be targeted for harm because of their beliefs or public engagement. As a society, we must respond by rejecting violence as a means of political expression. Both state and federal governments have a responsibility to safeguard public discourse and those who participate in it.”

Why I Give?

"I support the Center because their approach to creating a safer society is grounded in data. They carefully gather and analyze gun violence information, then translate it into powerful stories that drive effective advocacy. Noble objectives are great, but that's not enough to generate the policy reform we need; fact-based understanding is what is required to change hearts and minds, and ultimately inspire action."
