The Democrats’ shutdown countdown is on!
Funding for most federal agencies is set to expire tomorrow night. The House of Representatives passed a stopgap spending bill to keep the government open through November 21, but Senate Democrats are filibustering it. They say they won’t fund the government unless the bill extends expiring Covid-era Obamacare subsidies.
The Democrats are holding government funding hostage for $1.5 trillion, including for trans surgeries and health care for illegal immigrants!
President Trump has put himself and the GOP in an excellent strategic position heading into this fight. First, he has maneuvered Democrats into making weird and unpopular spending demands. Second, Trump’s top priorities — national security and immigration enforcement — would continue no matter what because those agencies got money in the One Big Beautiful Bill this summer. And third, Trump has already announced plans to permanently reform and downsize federal agencies if Democrats shut them down.
Best of all, congressional Democrats are stuck. Their shutdown strategy is being driven not by party leaders, but by radical leftist groups threatening to primary incumbents who back down! Democrats know their position is crazy, but they’re plunging ahead anyway. Their approval rating is already near all-time lows, and now they are threatening a shutdown to defend illegal immigrants and taxpayer-funded child mutilation!
This may be the most critical week of Trump’s entire term: stay tuned!
Conservative Spotlight
RON JOHNSON — As we approach another government shutdown showdown, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) is making his annual pitch for legislation to end Beltway brinksmanship once and for all. His Eliminate Government Shutdowns Act would, in the event of a spending lapse, automatically maintain agencies at their previous year’s funding levels. Conservatives know that Swamp elites like shutdown fights because they usually lead to more spending. Senator Johnson’s bill would end that bias and finally let fiscal conservatives negotiate on a level playing field.
ASHLEY MOODY & JOSH HAWLEY — Earlier this month, whistleblowers at Meta testified in the Senate that the company was covering up evidence of child exploitation and endangerment on their online platforms. Last week, Senators Ashley Moody (R-AL) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) wrote to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg demanding answers. Big Tech companies have been putting American kids at risk for years. Senate conservatives like Moody and Hawley are leading the fight to hold them accountable.
TED CRUZ — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, has introduced an important new bill to help America win the AI arms race against China. His plan, nicknamed the SANDBOX Act, would create an AI regulatory framework that encourages investment and innovation while protecting consumers and public health. This Week
The big story in the Senate this week will be the government funding debate and possible shutdown.
For now, the Senate has one vote scheduled tonight, on the nomination of former congressman and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz to represent the U.S. in the United Nations General Assembly.
The Senate is also expected to continue debating the annual National Defense Authorization Act this week.
