Methane is a super pollutant, over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term and responsible for 30% of the warming we’re experiencing. Every ton we avoid today can help reduce the impact of extreme weather and protect the climate and our health.
The 2024 U.S. EPA methane rule reduces pollution through proven and cost-effective solutions like requiring leak detection and repairs. Many oil and gas producers have gone on record in support of federal methane regulation. And major oil and gas producing states (Colorado, Wyoming, Pennsylvania and New Mexico) have already begun implementing the rule.
EPA’s own analysis notes that this delay will lead to more pollution, including smog-forming pollution and air toxics that cause cancer. Failure to control methane leaks also results in billions of dollars each year in wasted product and in climate damages.
In short: The 2024 U.S. EPA methane rule is effective at protecting our health and fighting climate change.
