G’day John,
********************

I was asked to speak at a Sydney event on Friday night and the
gentleman interviewing me had seen the video of me abseiling with
one of the young people from the Veteran Mentors program. You can
see that video here

Veteran Mentors was started by Afghanistan veteran Matt French.

Matt had a rugged childhood and in many ways joining the army
gave him structure and security.

When he left the ADF, Matt was determined to set up a program
that would help kids like him get on the right path. Matt’s
approach is more than a ‘boot camp’! Matt tells the kids his
story, which encourages them to their stories. Veteran Mentors
has been successful, but Matt needed more and I caught up with
him on Sunday to hear all about it.

Like me, Matt knows that early intervention is all, so he has
branched out and founded The Youth Regiment – an organisation
with a mission to combat youth crime and mental health issues
early. Their program is designed to install discipline,
resilience and education for young Australians, while supporting
the whole family and community dynamic.

Matt has attracted strong community, academic and corporate
support.

I was asked on Friday night what my main goals are – and it is
this! We can’t keep locking kids up in detentions centres because
becomes a fast track to prison.

Matt’s approach works! He doesn’t have government funding so I
will keep supporting Matt and fighting hard to get him the
support and collaboration he needs.

I want our kids to have the support to get the skills to help
them to be resilient and prepared for the challenges life throws
at them.
