John,
Today is the 4th of July — the day 244 years ago when the Declaration of Independence was adopted, granting America independence from Great Britain. The Declaration says that the government will derive its powers from the consent of the governed, meaning the people vote for our representation.
But we must recognize that has hardly been the case in America.
Racist and discriminatory voter suppression is rampant. And let's be clear, it is no accident that the communities most affected by gun violence — namely Black and Latinx communities — face the greatest barriers to the ballot box. Without fair access to vote, too many communities cannot fully participate in our democracy and advocate for the laws and policies that will keep us safe.
Bottom line: We can't prevent gun violence without a fair democracy.
This week, we released our # VotingAccessSavesLives campaign with March For Our Lives and Team ENOUGH to ensure everyone has access to the ballot box. We know that creating an equitable and safe democracy is inextricably tied to our fight for gun violence prevention.
We’re mobilizing gun violence prevention activists to lobby to expand voting access across four broad categories: Vote-by-mail and absentee voting, online and same-day voter registration, early voting, and restoring voting rights to people with felony convictions.
Will you recognize the 4th of July by joining our #VotingAccessSavesLives campaign? [[link removed]] Once you’re ready to get lobbying and put our policy solutions to action, join your friends and play our Democracy Bingo game. Download a game board and mark off the squares as you take action!

Gun violence has taken an enormous toll on the LGBTQ community. Nearly two-thirds of firearm deaths in the U.S. are suicides. For those using a gun, 90 percent of suicide attempts are fatal, and data shows that this has a particular impact on the transgender and adolescent members of the LGBTQ community. To discuss the risk of firearms and suicide in the LGBTQ community, JJ is joined Casey Pick of the Trevor Project. Listen now [[link removed]] .

This week, more than 10 gun violence prevention bills went into effect in Virginia! This was a long fought battle, and Brady played a key role in the passage of these lifesaving laws by organizing, testifying, and rallying behind them. To reflect on our progress in Virginia, we're revisiting our podcast episode that covers when a gun violence majority of Brady-endorsed candidates were elected in Virginia for the first time in decades. Brady Celebrates Historic Day For Virginia as Over 10 New Gun Violence Prevention Laws Take Effect [[link removed]] , Brady[[link removed]] "Young people are often blamed for not participating in the political processes, yet the truth is that we are often barred or discouraged from voting. Similarly, we know that our country’s policies continue to disenfranchise and discourage communities of color from the voting process. Tactics like gerrymandering and denying voting rights to formerly incarcerated individuals disproportionately affect communities of color and work not only to deny individuals from accessing the ballot, but also to disengage these communities from our democratic processes. Despite this, we know that all voices and votes matter. More so, they are necessary if we are to drive real change in our country."
