Bode bounded into my life in the summer of 2016 and stayed by my side until he passed away this spring. From the very beginning, we were inseparable. Before the pandemic, I brought him to the office and even to meetings on Capitol Hill. Bode bounded into my life in the summer of 2016 and stayed by my side until he passed away this spring. From the very beginning, we were inseparable.

Before the pandemic, I brought him to the office and even to meetings on Capitol Hill. During the height of the 2016 campaign, he traveled with me to the Hillary for America headquarters at the corner of Tillary and Clinton Streets in Brooklyn.

After the pandemic, Bode preferred the comforts of home (and who could blame him?). When I left the house, he might have pouted a little, but he never held it against me. He was always overjoyed to see me return.

Last fall, Bode suddenly stopped eating and slowed down. Soon after, he was diagnosed with cancer. He fought bravely for months, but by May, his body gave out, even though his spirit never did.

When Bode died, my wife and I said we didn’t want another dog. The joys dogs bring us are immeasurable, but their loss can be unbearable. Losing Bode left a cloud over us.

Then, over the summer, a woman with a litter of Portuguese Water Dogs reached out. She had followed Democracy Docket and knew about Bode’s passing. We said no — it felt too soon. I wasn’t ready to let go of Bode.

But later, she told us about a new litter of male puppies who’d be ready in late September. We went to visit, met Blue, and instantly fell in love. The feeling was mutual — Blue walked right up to my wife, curled up in her lap, and that was it. We were hooked.

Earlier this week, Blue officially joined our family, and we couldn’t be happier.

Bode will always live in our hearts, but I’ve realized there’s room for Blue, too. We chose his name because it starts with a “B,” honoring Bode, and because it reflects the moment we’re living in.

Back in 2016, when we named Bode after Olympic skier Bode Miller, it felt like a simpler time — politics felt different then. These days, skiing isn’t front of mind. Democracy is.

Many of you came to know Bode through Democracy Docket. I used to say Bode was democracy’s favorite dog. For me, he still is — but now Blue is here, ready to make his own mark, both in our lives and in the fight for democracy. I hope you come to love him as much as we already do.
