Dear John,

I want to share some updates with you from Congress and across our nation. Here are three things you need to know:

1. I am pleased to announce that the House of Representatives passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Enhancement Act. This piece of legislation will improve upon the promise of the ACA by expanding eligibility for middle-class families, strengthening protections for people with preexisting conditions, and pushing for Medicaid expansion. I call on my colleagues in the Senate to support this life-saving bill.

2. In other good news, the House also passed the Moving Forward Act, which earmarked billion-dollar investments into roads and transportation, public schools, affordable housing, safe drinking water, rural broadband, affordable health care, and job creation. As Chairman of a House Appropriations Subcommittee, I speak with authority when I say that these investments into our future will pay off in ways big and small.

3. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed in Congress 56 years ago yesterday. Our nation outlawed discrimination and segregation based on race, religion, sex, or national origin. Unfortunately, it is clear that many are still denied access to freedom, equality, and the American Dream. I vow to carry the legacy of civil rights with me as I advocate for voting rights, common-sense police reform, and equal opportunity for all Americans.
