Conference call: Forest on the fringe
Following our fringe meeting at the Reform UK conference in Birmingham a few weeks ago, our next event is at the Conservative conference in Manchester.
Co-hosted with the TaxPayers Alliance, it takes place in the TPA-run Think Tent at Manchester Central on Monday 6th October from 11:30-12:30.
Hosted by broadcaster and political commentator Duncan Barkes, the in-conversation style event features Conservative MP Jack Rankin, the TPA's Joanna Marchong, and Forest director Simon Clark. Together they will address the following:
The Labour Government intends to ban the sale of tobacco to all future generations of adults, but even under a leader who voted against the policy the Conservative Party remains ambiguous. If the Tobacco and Vapes Bill becomes law, what will it say about personal freedom in Britain today, and what is the next battleground in the war on choice?
If you are attending the Conservative conference do join us or, if not, please forward this email to someone who is.

On this day, 28th September 2005
The Labour Party conference is currently taking place in Liverpool. Remarkably, it's 20 years since Britain's greatest living artist David Hockney was a guest speaker at a fringe event hosted by Forest at the Labour conference in Brighton. This was before the introduction of the workplace smoking ban and Hockney's presence at a meeting opposing the ban was big news.
Before he travelled to Brighton David appeared on BBC Breakfast and the Today programme, during which he accused a Labour MP of being "dreary" and "bossy". In Brighton, following a photo op that was gatecrashed by anti-tobacco campaigner Stuart Holmes (below), he was interviewed by Andrew Neil on the BBC's live conference programme. Thereafter he was interviewed by the Independent, Guardian and Press Association, and that was before our fringe event at five o'clock.
Later that evening, over dinner at a restaurant in Brighton, he was also interviewed by the Sunday Times. So, quite a day.
