Dear John,
I hope this message finds you well and that you’ve had an enjoyable
September. This weekend, I was delighted to join the Macmillan Coffee
Morning alongside Dr David Lloyd at St Albans Church in North Harrow,
kindly hosted by the Ridgeway Surgery. It was a wonderful community
event in support of a vital cause, raising much-needed funds for
Macmillan’s important work.
We all know some who has bravely fought cancer, some still facing the
battle and, sadly, someone we have lost.
My heartfelt thanks go to everyone hosting a MacMillan Coffee Morning
in Harrow this month - I only wish I could attend them all.
Across Harrow, London and the country, thousands of Coffee Mornings,
big and small, are raising essential funds to support the 3 million
people in the UK living with cancer. Macmillan Cancer Support provides
invaluable help from the moment someone is diagnosed, through
treatment and beyond. I am deeply grateful for all that they do.
Thank you to everyone who has already organised an event or
contributed to raising money for this great cause. I will be working
on a campaign regarding cancer services locally and I welcome stories
and experiences from all of my residents.
It has been a pleasure to get along to Navratri celebrations, today is
the seventh of nine nights of dancing and festivities for Harrow’s
Hindu community. As always, it has been a joy to visit temples across
Harrow, Brent and Ealing to meet and dance with residents.
Below is my newsletter covering some of my work in Parliament and
locally in Harrow too – as always, throughout the year, you can find

NEW POWERS TO VETO VAPES AND BETTING SHOPS
📝 CAMPAIGN WIN! 📝
The Government has announced reforms this week that will give local
people far greater power to shape high streets. Communities will
finally be able to:
✅ Block problem shops, such as dodgy vape outlets and unlicensed
barbers
✅ Seize boarded-up shops and bring them back into use
✅ Save treasured pubs, libraries and other community spaces
✅ Clean up derelict and neglected buildings
There is still much more to do to tackle problem shops and restore
pride in our town centres, but this announcement is a big step in the
right direction. I’m particularly proud to see a long-standing
Co-operative Party policy reflected here – the Community Right to
Buy. This will make it easier for local groups to take ownership of
treasured assets such as village shops, pubs, or children’s centres,
with the Government now doubling the time available to raise funds for
a purchase from six months to 12.

5,000,000 EXTRA NHS APPOINTMENTS
New statistics show that the Labour Government has delivered over 5
million extra appointments across our NHS – more than double the
target we set before the last election.
Across the NHS Trust covering Harrow, there have been over 130,000
extra scans, operations and consultations compared to the final year
under the Conservatives.
That means:
✅ Faster diagnoses, including for cancer
✅ Less time spent on waiting lists
✅ Quicker access to care for people across Harrow
This is the real difference a Labour Government makes – promises
made, promises kept.
SUMMER WORK EXPERIENCE
Grateful to have had 20 bright Harrow students join me for this
year’s Campaign Summer School. 🌟
Over two weeks, they rolled up their sleeves – from litter-picking
in the rain to redistributing surplus food – and turned those
experiences into thoughtful policy proposals on political education,
food waste, and more. Huge thanks to Matt Turmaine MP for judging
their excellent campaign pitches, each inspiring in its own way.
A special shout-out to the amazing Harrow Litter Pickers, who guided
us through collecting 60 bags of rubbish in South Harrow, and to
McDonald’s for hosting and treating the winning group to McFlurries!
🍦
It was also a privilege to visit the incredible team at London’s
Community Kitchen, where our students helped serve hundreds at the
weekly surplus food market – open to everyone until 5pm. Thank you
to all the volunteers for your dedication.
We were equally grateful to Krupesh Hirani AM for welcoming the
students to City Hall and speaking about successful campaigns for
step-free access, toilet accessibility, and more.
It was a fantastic couple of weeks, and I can’t wait to see what
these young changemakers achieve next.

FORMAL RECOGNITION OF PALESTINE
I warmly welcome the fact that this week, the UK Government, alongside
Australian and Canadian Governments have recognised the inalienable
right of the Palestinians to self-determination, peace and justice.
I pay tribute to Ambassador Husam Zomlot for his tireless advocacy on
behalf of his government and people.
In 2014, I voted for the recognition of the State of Palestine - and
have campaigned for it ever since. This week, I am proud that the UK
has formally recognised the state of Palestine.
The situation on the ground could not be more grave. Palestinian
civilians in Gaza and the West Bank are facing a campaign of violence
from the Israeli military and settlers, described by the International
Criminal Court as war crimes and crimes against humanity. This is an
existential moment for Palestine.
Recognition matters. It affirms Palestinians’ equal right to
self-determination alongside Israelis. It upholds international law,
reflecting the International Court of Justice ruling that the 1967
occupation is unlawful and that settlements are illegal. And it makes
clear that Britain, with international partners, is pushing for a just
and lasting peace.
It also challenges this Israeli Government’s claim to all of
historic Palestine and signals that Britain will not turn a blind eye
to aggression and annexation. Recognition is not symbolic - if it
were, it would have happened long ago. Instead, it marks a real shift:
from silence to parity, from delay to justice. That is why it matters.
BUT RECOGNITION ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH. IT MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY URGENT
ACTION TO STOP THE KILLING AND STARVATION.
No one can support the Hamas attacks, or the kidnapping and murder of
hostages. It is also important to acknowledge the steps our Labour
Government has taken:
• Sanctioning extremist Israeli ministers
• Suspending arms licences and trade talks with Israel
• Restoring UNRWA funding and announcing £101m in new
humanitarian support
• Signing a joint donor statement with 27 humanitarian partners on
aid to Gaza
• Summoning the Israeli Ambassador
• Calling consistently for a full and permanent ceasefire and the
release of hostages
• Dropping the previous government’s objection to the ICC and
its arrest warrants
This is a historic week - a long overdue act of justice. But it is
only a step on the path to peace. The work cannot, and must not, stop
here.
WORLD CLEAN UP DAY
Last weekend we commemorated World Clean-Up Day in Harrow, and I was
proud to join residents in Wealdstone for a massive community
clean-up. Together, across different parts of the area, we collected
well over 100 bags of litter.
My huge thanks to the Harrow Litter Pickers, the Who is Hussain
volunteers, and Harrow Central Mosque for hosting us.
For me, true patriotism - and real pride in place - comes from people
consistently supporting one another, looking out for their neighbours,
and building stronger communities. In an age where online echo
chambers seek to fuel division and heighten tensions, that spirit of
togetherness matters more than ever. I believe, and I know many share
this belief, that there is far more that unites us than divides us.
THAT IS THE PATRIOTISM THAT MAKES ME PROUD TO BE BRITISH, AND PROUD TO
BE FROM HARROW.
JESS'S RULE TO PREVENT AVOIDABLE DEATHS
A new initiative will ask GPs to take a ‘three strikes and
rethink’ approach to prevent avoidable deaths.
Jess’s Rule is named in memory of Jessica Brady, who died of cancer
in December 2020 at the age of 27 after 20 appointments at her GP
surgery failed to diagnose her condition.
The new initiative will ask GPs to think again if, after three
appointments, they have been unable to offer a substantiated
diagnosis, or the patient’s symptoms have escalated. This will
standardise practice across the country.

DIGITAL ID TO COMBAT ILLEGAL WORKING
A new digital ID scheme will help combat illegal working while making
it easier for the vast majority of people to use vital government
services.
The scheme will be available to all UK citizens and legal residents,
saving time by ending the need for complicated identity checks which
often rely on copies of paper records.
Instead, the roll-out will in time make it simpler to apply for
services like driving licences, childcare and welfare, while
streamlining access to tax records.
There will be no requirement for individuals to carry their ID or be
asked to produce it – but digital ID will be mandatory for Right to
Work checks by the end of the Parliament.
This will stop those with no right to be here from being able to find
work, curbing their prospect of earning money, one of the key ‘pull
factors’ for people who come to the UK illegally.

FUNDRAISING DINNER FOR 1ST ROXETH SCOUTS
🌟 A huge thank you to everyone who answered the call to join my
fundraising dinner in support of the 1st Roxeth Scouts – together we
raised vital funds towards their new van, which will help them
continue serving communities in South Harrow and beyond. 🚐
If you’d like to contribute to their van fund, you can email
[email protected].
Here’s why your support matters:
• 🚐 Newly acquired van now transports
equipment to camps and events throughout the year.
• 🤝 Shared resource: It’s also used by
other Scout groups across the district.
• ⛪ Supports our community: We help church
members at our venue move items when needed.
• 💸 Cost-effective: Owning a van saves
repeated hire costs and lets us respond quickly when plans change.
• 🎪 Vital for local events: The van was
essential for getting gear to this weekend’s Roxeth Show — without
it, we simply couldn’t have taken part.
• 🏘️ Active community presence: From the
Pinner Village Show to the upcoming Whitmore Lights Switch-On, the van
helps us say “yes” to more opportunities.
